Experience the romance of music and railways in the 19th Century Hall

Hello! I'm Mo, a female college student. Not long ago, I went to a lot of Kyoto's shrines and temples, as well as places with beautiful scenery such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, but recently I've been refraining from doing so due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I've been basking in the memories of places I've been to before (lol). Kyoto is a really mysterious place, and in addition to the various temples and shrines, it's also super interesting because it has famous cherry blossom and autumn leaf spots. Each place has its own unique character, so the more you get to know it, the deeper it becomes!!!

Well, this time I would like to explain about the 19th Century Hall, do you know about it?

This time, I would like to give you a simple and easy-to-understand introduction to the 19th Century Hall!

Please stay with us until the end!

How to get to the 19th Century Hall

What is the 19th Century Hall?

At the 19th Century Hall in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, real steam locomotives, pianos, large organs and more are on display. It's a must-see for steam locomotive lovers!!! And what's more, it's not just one steam locomotive, but several!!!

Why is it called the 19th Century Hall?

The 19th century saw the Industrial Revolution. Many of the technologies that support modern life were invented around this time.

The 19th century saw a transformation in the railroad industry, with the introduction of steam locomotives, which dramatically changed logistics. The birth of the steam locomotive is said to be one of the factors that made Japan a technological superpower.

That is why it was named the 19th Century Hall.

・Pianos and organs loved by great masters such as Beethoven and Chopin

・You can see a real steam locomotive!!!

The highlight of the 19th Century Hall is undoubtedly the steam locomotive on display just as it was back then!!! It's very realistic!!!

In addition to the famous "D51," there are also "C56," "C58," and "Wakataka."

The "Wakataka" was remodeled in September 1939 by students from the Takatori Works Technical Training School of the former Japanese National Railways.

A must-see for steam locomotive fans!!

Recently, some areas have been reviving steam locomotives as part of their efforts to revitalize their town!

Whether you like steam locomotives or not, you will surely be impressed, so be sure to go!!!

・Pianos and organs loved by great masters such as Beethoven and Chopin

The steam locomotive isn't the only thing in the 19th Century Hall!!!

19th century masters such as Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert, Bach, and Brahms

On display are Bösendorfer pianos, beloved by composers such as Mendelssohn and Mozart.

Among them, the Bösendorfer Imperial model has 97 keys, 9 more than the lowest key range!! This means that it can produce sounds up to the very limit of the audible range that humans can hear!! For this reason, it is also said to be the best grand piano in the world.

Not only pianos but also organs are on display.

Also on display is the Aalen Organ Quantum, which is said to be the queen of instruments and combines a large organ with electronic technology.

Actually, I also learned to play the piano when I was little!!!

I haven't played it much recently, so I can't play it anymore.

I used to play Chopin's Minute Waltz...

Putting that aside for now

In any case, the 19th Century Hall is an irresistible space not only for train enthusiasts, but also for music lovers and those who love the piano and organ!!!
