Kamogawa River is loved by locals! How about enjoying a meal while cooling off on a summer terrace?

Hello! I'm Mo, a female college student. Not long ago, I used to visit a lot of Kyoto's shrines and temples, as well as places with beautiful scenery such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, but recently, times have changed, so I've been basking in the memories of places I've been to before (lol). Kyoto is a really mysterious place, and in addition to the various temples and shrines, there are also famous cherry blossom and autumn leaf spots, which makes it really interesting. Each place has its own unique character, so the more you get to know it, the deeper it becomes!!!

Well, this time I would like to explain about the Kamo River, but do you all know about this river??? It's quite famous, isn't it!!!

I knew about the Kamo River, but I didn't know much about it. So I decided to go there!!! I've put together this article about what I felt when I went there!

This time, I would like to explain the Kamo River in a simple and easy-to-understand way!

Please stay with us until the end!

What is Kamo River?

When talking about rivers in Kyoto, the most famous one is the Kamo River.

The Kamo River is very long, with a total of 10 bridges spanning it from Gojo Ohashi Bridge to Demachiyanagi Bridge.

The scenery of the Kamo River in Shijo is unique to Kyoto, and I pass by it every time I go to Kyoto, and I feel that Kyoto is a wonderful city.

Now I would like to talk about the history of the Kamo River.

Long ago, when Emperor Shirakawa ruled Kyoto, the Kamo River was a violent river that would occasionally flood and cause damage to the people. It was one of the three things that Emperor Shirakawa lamented about things that did not go as he wanted: the monk of Mount Hiei, the dice roll, and the water of the duck.

The Kamo River is now peaceful and beloved by the people of Kyoto, but in the past it was a river that caused trouble for the people of Kyoto.

During the Edo period, teahouses and restaurants set up shop on the riverbank and the area became very lively.

It was during the Meiji period that the still popular summer platform was designed to be raised on high floors.

Perhaps it is only at the Kamo River that you can spend time relaxing surrounded by nature.

・The Kamo River, beloved by locals

When I went to Kyoto, I saw a lot of people relaxing on the banks of the Kamo River!!! Relaxing on the banks of the river on a nice day is something that never happens in my hometown (lol)

I felt that the Kamo River is loved by the people of Kyoto.

In addition, there is a group called the Kamogawa River Beautification Association.

Founded in 1964, this association is a volunteer group whose aim is to beautify the river and protect the environment. Local people carry out cleaning activities and other activities to create a beautiful Kamo River.

・Enjoy the cool floor in the summer!

A seasonal feature of summer in Kyoto is the nouryou-yuka (cozy terrace)

A noryo-yuka is a type of outdoor seating where restaurants and teahouses build stilt-style rooms with a good view of the river and serve food. It takes place every year from May to September (May to the end of October in 2021). It is held from Nijo Ohashi Bridge to the Gojo Ohashi Bridge area. It used to be common for Kyoto cuisine to be kaiseki cuisine and seasonal dishes, but recently it seems that a variety of cuisines such as Italian and French cuisine are being served.

If you visit Kyoto in the summer, be sure to go to a noryoyuka!!

How to get to the Kamogawa Nouryouyuka

We will show you how to get to Kamogawa River, located in Saga, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City.

There are several ways to get to Kamogawa River from Kyoto Station using public transportation, but I personally recommend taking the city bus.

First, take a bus from Kyoto Station to "Shijo Kawaramachi", "Kawaramachi Gojo", or "Kyoto City Hall". The ride takes about 20 minutes.

City buses are convenient because you don't have to change buses.

If you go by subway, take the Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station to Shijo Station. The ride takes 3 minutes. Transfer at Shijo Station and head to Kawaramachi Station on the Hanshin Line.

Alternatively, take the Karasuma Subway Line from Kyoto Station to Karasuma-Oike Station, then change to the Tozai Subway Line and get off at Kyoto City Hall Station.

If you find it difficult to walk or your legs are tired, we recommend taking a taxi.

By taxi, it takes about 15 minutes from Kyoto Station, 6 minutes from Karasumaoike Station, and 5 minutes from Shijo Station.

If you walk from the nearest station, it takes about 15 minutes from Shijo Station and about 20 minutes from Karasuma Oike Station.

Nearby are Yasaka Shrine and the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and a little further away is Kiyomizu-dera Temple. We recommend visiting these places as well as the Kamo River!
