History of the Kimono: Kosode...The Evolution

After the invention of the tunic, the sides were sewn together and tubular sleeves were added to improve the effect of retaining body heat and protecting the body.

It is easy to attach the sleeves, since all you have to do is cut and sew together the pieces evenly. However, adding the sleeves makes it difficult to put on and take off the garment. Therefore, it is thought that the stitching on the front of the body was then undone.

However, a problem arose here. If the front was open, wind would get in and it would be cold. To prevent this, a collar was added so that the front body parts would overlap, and a collar was added to protect the neck area and improve protection against the cold.

This would bring us quite close to the shape of the kimono we wear today. When we think about the evolutionary process in this way, it is easy to imagine how the kimono evolved from the kantogi.

The kantogi is a simple garment cut in straight lines, and the kimono, which evolved from it, has the same characteristics.
