Sumida River Lantern Festival - A summer night that lights up the soul
This summer, I took part in the Sumida River Lantern Festival for the first time, wearing a kimono, something I'd always wanted to do.
As I walked through the streets of Asakusa at dusk, people in yukata came and went, and a nostalgic breeze blew. I was wearing a pale wisteria kimono with a goldfish-patterned obi. I was wearing geta sandals, which I was a little unfamiliar with. But even that inconvenience felt like part of the charm.
When I arrived at the banks of the Sumida River, many people were already lined up with lanterns in hand. Each lantern contained a wish or sentiment, and I also wrote "family health" and "a step towards a new challenge."
The moment when the lantern is gently floated on the water's surface
I was enveloped in a mysterious sensation, as if my heart was quietly dissolving into the river. The sight of countless lanterns slowly floating by was so fantastical that it is hard to put into words; it felt like I was in a dream.
Participating in the event in a kimono allowed me to experience the beauty of the event even more firsthand. The sleeves fluttering in the breeze, the lights reflected on the river, and the quiet prayers of the people all came together in harmony, creating a summer memory that will stay with me forever.
It was a special night that made me want to come back here in a kimono again next year.
