Coming of Age Ceremony
Furisode trivia
Coming of Age Ceremony is a rite of passage in life that celebrates becoming a social adult.
The age of 19 was considered an unlucky year, and so the custom of wearing long sleeves to ward off evil spirits and protect oneself developed.
The current age of adulthood in Japan, 20 years old, was established in 1896 by the Civil Code.
In most other countries, the age of adulthood is 18.
As of April 1, 2022, the age of adulthood will be lowered to 18 years old.
January 15th was "Coming of Age Day"
"Coming of Age Day" is a national holiday on which the country celebrates those who have come of age. It used to be set on January 15th, but is now the second Monday in January, and was revised in 2000 under the Happy Monday system.
Coming of Age Ceremony Invitation
Since Coming of Age Ceremonies are held by local governments, invitations will come from the city, town or village where you are registered as a resident.
However, there are also various types of coming-of-age ceremonies organized by schools, such as for students graduating from private junior high schools.Opportunities to wear furisode
