The Sanja Festival, which takes place mainly at Asakusa Shrine, will be held again this year for three days from Friday, May 17th to Sunday, May 19th, 2024.
The Sanja Matsuri is one of Japan's most famous festivals, attracting approximately 1.8 million people every year.
Starting with the "Grand Procession" and "Binzasara Dance" on the first day, on the second day about 100 mikoshi (portable shrines) gather at the Asakusa Shrine grounds and parade through the streets of Asakusa. The main event of the Sanja Matsuri is the "Main Shrine Mikoshi Procession through the Towns" on the third day! The excitement of the Sanja Matsuri reaches its peak as the large mikoshi parades through the town.
Strolling through Asakusa while watching the mikoshi being vigorously swung up and down is sure to lift your spirits.
During the festival, many different food stalls will be set up within the grounds of Sensoji Temple, so you can enjoy the festival with classic treats like takoyaki and shaved ice in hand.
If you are visiting Asakusa, a downtown area that still retains the atmosphere of the Edo period, on the liveliest day of the year, why not blend into the atmosphere in a yukata?
