Introduction to "Going With You - Shinsengumi Youth Chronicles"
TV Asahi and Toei join forces! A new style of period drama is born this spring, late on Wednesday nights!
In the spring of 2024, a new drama will be born in TV Asahi's Wednesday late-night Super Barabara Daisakusen time slot! TV Asahi and Toei will join forces to create an unprecedented "new period drama."
This major project will shine a spotlight on the Shinsengumi, an organization that still deeply moves the hearts of Japanese people. Fitting for the new format, the cast will include a fresh cast of next-generation breakout actors, who will beautifully and vividly portray the youth of the young members of the corps, who flashed through the chaotic times of the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and then perished before their fleeting deaths.
The unknown masterpiece by Tezuka Osamu, the "God of Manga," is adapted to the screen for the first time!
The original work is "Shinsengumi," a hidden masterpiece by Osamu Tezuka, a brilliant figure in the history of Japanese manga. In 1963 (Showa 38), when the work was published, the existence of the Shinsengumi itself was not highly regarded, and the image of each character was not as solidified as it is today. Against this background, this work, which depicts the conflicts of the members while weaving in historical facts from Tezuka's unique perspective, is a masterpiece that is highly acclaimed among fans and known only to those in the know.
Of course, real people such as Kondo Isami, Okita Souji, and Serizawa Kamo also appear in the story, but the main characters are two young soldiers, Fukakusa Kyujuro and Kamagiri Daisaku, who are depicted as original characters. Kyujuro, whose father was killed, joins the Shinsengumi to hone his sword skills and avenge his father. During the entrance exam, he meets a cool boy named Daisaku. Although his origins are unknown, Daisaku's sword skills are outstanding and he is welcomed into the Shinsengumi as a promising new recruit. The two develop a passionate friendship, but before they know it, they are at the mercy of the times and are drawn into a tragic fate in which they must kill each other.
Screenwriter Tsubota Aya ("Beautiful Man") and director Kawai Hayato ("10 Counts to the Future") create a fresh and beautiful portrait of youth!
Friendship, betrayal, the times, conspiracy - this story, infused with the dramaturgy of the unparalleled genius Tezuka, is being elevated into a new style of period drama by the talented screenwriter Tsubota Aya, who delicately and vividly wove the conflicting emotions of high school boys in the hit drama series "Utsukushii Kare," which was also made into a film.
The production will be directed by Kawai Hayato, who has directed the dynamic youth dramas in the films "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" and "10 Counts to the Future" (TV Asahi). This superb lineup will emotionally depict the youth of the Shinsengumi, who were killed off during the turbulent end of the Edo period just a few years after their formation.
There will also be sword dancing and sword fighting performances! An unprecedented historical entertainment event is born!!
"You and I Will Bloom ~ Shinsengumi Youth Record ~" will be filmed at Toei Kyoto Studio, the "holy land of period dramas." As a new work born from Kyoto's Uzumasa area, which has a 100-year history, it is sure to be a full-fledged film that will wow period drama fans, but at the same time, this work will incorporate innovative sword fighting performances and elegant "sword dances" that have never been seen in period dramas before, truly unprecedented! A new style of historical entertainment = "New period dramas" will be created.
